An independent AML/CTF review inside an org-wide transformation
A large NSW registered club was undertaking a whole-of-org transformation, and needed an independent view of its AML/CTF program as part of it.
The brief
A board-wide transformation is exactly the moment an AML/CTF program shouldn’t be left to self-assess. With governance itself under review, the board needed genuine independent assurance that the program met its obligations - not a management-produced view folded quietly into the broader transformation narrative. Independently review the club’s AML/CTF program as one strand of the broader board-wide transformation, and give the board findings it could rely on precisely because they came from outside the program being assessed.
Our approach
We assessed the program against its obligations across the areas that matter most under independent review - the currency of its risk assessment, the effectiveness of its ongoing monitoring, and the clarity of its reporting lines into the board - rather than taking the program’s own self-assessment as the starting point. We then deliberately framed the findings and recommendations in the context of the wider transformation the board was driving, so the board received one coherent picture of where governance stood, rather than a compliance report that read as disconnected from everything else the transformation was addressing.
The outcome
An independent review, with findings and recommendations the board could act on as part of its transformation program. The board now has assurance that came from outside the program itself, and a set of findings framed to slot directly into the transformation it was already running - rather than a separate compliance exercise competing for the board’s attention alongside it.
